As we continue to weather the COVID-19 pandemic, prioritizing employee mental health in the workplace is more important than ever. In this panel discussion, local leaders in the fields of health, education, and business will discuss the long-term benefits of creating a mental health-friendly workplace, including helping employees lead longer, more fulfilling lives, and improving employee retention.
Panelists will also share actionable strategies to reduce the stigma of prioritizing mental health and increase support for employees in businesses of all sizes.
This program is relevant for business owners and team leaders, HR professionals, wellness professionals, educators, and those interested in mental health workplace best practices.
Mary Jane Krebs, RN, MA, FACHE,President and Interim Chief Nursing Officer – Spring Harbor Hospital and Senior Vice President of the Intensive Service Line – Maine Behavioral Healthcare
Mary Jane Krebs, RN, MA, FACHE, is leading the priority of safe patient flow and lowering lengths of stay for adult patients at Spring Harbor, as well as cultivating employee engagement across the Maine Behavioral Healthcare system to attract and retain the best professionals in the field. In addition, she is working with leaders at Southern Maine Healthcare to plan and manage the new Behavioral Health Unit at Sanford Hospital.
Previously, Mary Jane was the CEO of Community Counseling Center, now also part of Maine Behavioral Healthcare; Chief Clinical and Nursing Officer at Spring Harbor and Maine Medical Center’s Department of Psychiatry; and Vice President of Clinical Services at Jackson Brook Institute. Mary Jane completed her undergraduate nursing degree at the College of New Jersey and graduate degree at New York University.
She is a fellow in the American College of Healthcare Executives, a steering committee member of the National Association of Behavioral Health, is president of the Southern Maine Agency on Aging Board of Trustees, is an active member of the MHA Mental Health Council, and co-chairs the United Way of Greater Portland Thrive 2027 Cabinet 3, focused on population health.
Sarah Caron,Global Well-being Manager – IDEXX Laboratories, Inc.
Sarah has been with IDEXX for 5 years where she works to build an understanding of what well-being means within the IDEXX culture and leads the global well-being strategy. The strategy focuses holistically on physical health, emotional resilience, social connectedness, and financial wellness.
Prior to IDEXX, Sarah served on active duty as a Registered Dietitian in the Air Force which taught her a lot about health promotion in dynamic environments. Sarah has an MBA with a strategic management focus through Temple University and an undergraduate degree in Health Sciences and Nutrition from the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs.
Cris Lane, Head of Total Rewards – IDEXX Laboratories, Inc.
Cris has been with IDEXX for 15 years, first joining the company as part of the Finance organization before transitioning over to Human Resources in 2016. During her time at IDEXX Cris has been a key member of the Wellbeing Steering Committee over the past decade and witnessed the growth of the program transforming from “a treadmill” to the holistic, multifaceted program that it is today that permeates IDEXX’s culture.
With a background in finance, Cris brings a financial lens to programming decisions and where possible has pushed for understanding the return on the Company’s investment. Cris is a CPA with an MBA from Boston College and an undergraduate degree in accounting from Pennsylvania State University.
Tawny Alvarez, Partner, Verrill Dana, LLP
Tawny prides herself on helping clients comply with the law while simultaneously creating an amazing place to work. As a Verrill Partner and Vice-Chair of the firm’s Labor & Employment Group, she centers her practice on the understanding that the employment landscape is ever-changing and organizations do not have the time or resources to keep abreast of all these changes—from medical (and recreational) marijuana’s effect on drug testing to the effect of social networking in the workplace, including the effect of the use of mobile devices on wage and hour issues. In this evolving landscape, Tawny recognizes that for companies to remain profitable and successful they must be proactive, not merely reactive, to these issues.

Emily Rines is the Director of Health at United Way of Southern Maine and is staff to Thrive2027 Goal 3, which is to help us all live longer, better by reducing preventable premature deaths by 10% by 2027. She attended the University of South Carolina, Arnold School of Public Health, and has spent the last 20 years working to promote and support healthy communities in South Carolina and Maine. At United Way of Southern Maine, she works to increase access to mental health and substance use prevention and treatment services.
